Evaluation

Initially I rated myself seven out of ten, after having spent an entire semester in Communication Skills class; I can comfortable move to a nine out of ten; I am being modest.

I have definitely learnt alot from this class, especially when we got down to the presentation. "I'm a boss" that is at presentation, I implemented all that I learned in this class and I aced my presentations.

Ms. Mangah thank you for all you have done for me and I truly enjoyed your class and you can look for me again cause every course that I have to do that you are teaching, believe it I will enroll in that class.

Last Group Meeting before the BIG DAY

The last group meeting before the day of the presentation, tonight it was more or less a test trial, hopefully everything goes well on Monday. I am incharge of decorating and I think everyone has such high expectations of me; I don't want to let anyone down. But I am doing much research on decorating ideas and asking people who are in the decorating field alot of questions, so on Monday "God's Willing" I will be very equipt to handle my job as designer.

we have alot in store and everything sounds so good, I just hope that everyone enjoys it and we pull this thing off really well.

All About the Group Meeting

I am incharge of the decorations, I am not sure I know what to do yet but it will be great. "Funkii
Munkii" is back in, and I just love it. The group meeting I think was a success; we always come to a common understanding and we have such great ideas. I just hope everything goes well on Monday, and everything just flows good. I want to do some research for some ideas of decorating the area, I mean I was placed incharge of decorating but I am willing to accept any suggestions of the group after all we are all going to have to benefit or not from this work. I am just working for an "A" and doing all I can to make sure that this is exactly what I receive, I mean I did work hard for it.

Group Meeting #2

I will say that we had a successful group meeting but some may think otherwise, this one girl was against everything; oh man she was running a nerve. we had a really cool name "funky monkey" she found that funky sounds dirty so wanted it to be changed, I personally felt that she confused "funky" with "funky" I mean there are different meanings. So the new name is "NU3-US" yes, I mean it was cleaver but who can beat "funky monkey" just awesome.

GROUP PRESENTATION "Product"

All I can say is "WOW", initially I thought that it was all "make believe" but only to realize that......No No we have to come up with the real thing.

Carlene and I had to split up, we are in different groups; but I must say I feel quite comfortable in this group. We do not have any concrete ideas as yet but we are all talking and everyone has an input. I must say we have a wonderful group leader.

Working on some great ideas to share with my group on Wednesday, have alot flying around in my mind. The other group wants me to switch when the other guy comes on Wednesday but I am sticking with my group.

Hope they would not be mad.

MY PRESENTATION

My presentation was this evening, I was not as nervous as I thought I would have been. I was very relaxed and calm. I did time my self and practised alot but in presenting I just didn't go according to what I was supposed to do. But I thought to my self that I did good.

My classmates presentations were exceptional, I can't say that I disliked any; The persons who I feel sorry for are those who did not show up to present I mean 20% lost. ouch!

I am so glad that this is all done and gone, heard tonight that I have another presentation to do; just when I thought that I was through with presentations, but what can I say, "Bring it on". I am so ready for anything.

Presentations 1st Group

First of all, I want to say congratulations to all the presentors, you all did great jobs!

I learned some things about USC that I did not know at all, for exampe from the pictures; the disgusting state of the mens dorm bathrooms.
The presentation on the shuttle service; true, serious facts were brought across in a very comical way. this situation really does need to be addressed and the suggestion to have a bus by the english block gate was a truly wise one indeed.

End of semester exam is really nerve wreaking and although an invigilator has never made me feel as if I am cheating before; nor have I seen it happen to anyone, this really needs to be addressed.

I'm up first on Wednesday, wish me "All the Best."

VIDEOS

The video's were excellent, I absolutely benefitted from them. Michelle Obama, I consider her to be a great speaker. Even great speakers need to practice and I appreciated that; also seeing her family there for support was good. Therefore for my speech in support of me my family have no choice but to listen to me. :)

The video on LISTEN was also much appreciated, I plan to pay attention to others while they give their speech as it may benefit me as well and could aid in building future relationships with my classmates.

THE BIG DAY

I am very thankful that I have to present on Wednesday; I can observe others give their speech and get a few hints of what to do and what not to do. 3 - 5 minutes seems to be so short a time when you are doing nothing or just hanging out, but to give a speech in that same time, oh how time seems to drag. The topic for this speech is another thing you can have either too little to say and then you have all this time still left on your hands or have the world to say and try to squeeze everthing in. I am indeed looking forward to the presentation, I believe that we have a wide range of age groups and personalities in this class and that is why I believe that alot would be discussed. what matters to someone may be barely noticed by another and that would make things really interesting.

Quiz

That quiz have been on my mind since I knew it was coming, but if I told you we were given the quiz on the same day as promised I felt like I would have done so poorly I would have been so ashamed to attend class the next session. I am kind of happy that I eneded up doing Strategies for Diverse and Exceptional Learners and Communication Skills together; because they are related in some aspects, multicultural and ethnocentrism and etc. I can really say that I am enjoying the clash.

SLANGS

Do I use slangs in my everyday conversations, I try not to. This is because I pride myself in the use of standard english, although when among my sisters slangs just slips out, I guess I get comfortable. In a setting like this I guess the use of slangs could be considered appropriate because I am not in the eyes of the public, another reason I believe that my use of slangs in this way appropriate is because we are not judging each other, whatever slangs we use are acceptable, we are not concerned about vocabulary nor are we concerned about being well polished.

We are together to "ole" talk, laugh, have fun and have alittle girl bonding time.

Verbal Communicator

In order to communicate effectively, you must speak clearly. It is important to enunciate carefully so that others can understand what you say, if you are not easily understood whatever you say although being important will be lost. Being able to demonstrate liguistic sensitivity is important because people will be inclined to listen with an open mind, it will also aid in maintaining good relationships with others. Because of the above mentioned reasons I pride myself to be an effective verbal communicator, communication is the key to healthy happy relationships and as an effective communicator clarity in speech as well as demonstrating linguistic sensitivity are important to me.

"Siblings die hours apart"
by Susan Mohammed

On Saturday 8th October, 2011 Donna Edwin-Alexander was found dead in bed she died of a brain aneurysm, he brother Ezekiel Edwin visited her at the funeral home then collapsed and died of a heart attack some hours after. In addition their older sister died four years ago to this date. The first thing that came to my mind when I read this article was "creepy", this is a very sad story for any one family to lost two persons on the same day. After reading this article my perception was that I think that this family has a curse, or it could be some form of obeah. what it is really is a mistery, and maybe something we will never know.

"BO BO SHANTI" IN TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO

The "Bo Bo Shanti", I did learn alot from this presentation, for one thing the food that they eat, they eat vegetables with the exception of those that are grown on vines, this fact was really interesting. I did not consider this culture to be strange or weird, I just thought of it as something different; their beliefs and customs are all really understandable. After learning these thing about the "Bo Bo Shanti" I look at them differently now, I think that I have more respect for them as a group because I have come to learn of their way and I respect them for the stand that they take on what they believe.

In-class Presentation: - CULTURE

From the In-class Presentation on CULTURE from the presentation on Muslims in Dubai I learned that in order to shake a woman's hands you must first ask her permission, Muslims in Trinidad seem to be abit different in that the traditional wears are optional while in Dubai they are manditory. The presentation on Australian Aboriginies was very interesting, I learned about their religion, "Dreamtime" they worshipped totems and would form marriage alliances with opposite tribes. The class presentation on CULTURES was indeed informative and very interesting.

Culture and Communication

Culture is basically human behaviour or patterns, knowledge, folklore, language, customs, rituals, habits, lifestyle, attitude and beliefs. Cultures are created through communication, it isn't something planned, it just happens as a result of relationships, groups, organization, family etc.
Because culture can be easily changed and can be easily lost as it exist entirely in our minds, however, I communicate is totally based on my culture. My verbal as well as my non verbal behaviours are obvious. Coming from a mixed culture words such as bilna, aloo, dee dee, bowgi are words that are used based on culture, verbal utterances. When it comes to my non verbal behaviour, my attitude, habits and my beliefs they were all passed on to me from my parents, grandparents and others in my community.

Central doctor shot, robbed.
by Camille Bethel

Breaking News: State of Emergency declared in Trinidad and Tobago. This SoE took effect since Sunday 21st August 2011. A state of emergency is a governmental declaration that may suspend some normal functions of the executive, legislative and judicial powers, alert citizens to change their normal behaviours, or order government agencies to implement emergency preparedness plans. It can also be used as a rationale for suspending rights and freedoms, even if guaranteed under the constitution.
I must certainly agree that alot has come to light since then; most unhanded activities, weapons, drugs etc. Crime still continues at least 14 murders during the first month of the SoE. This goes to show that all of man's efforts to bring about Peace and Security is all in vain, God's Word can never be proved to be wrong. Only under God's Government can we be assured of ideal living conditions.

September 11th 2001

September 11th 2001, a day that most if not all Americans will never forget. Personally 9/11's effects on me were mild. Firstly i had just arrived from vacationing in New York City, leaving my father behind. although he was not in New York at the time, it was still nerve wreaking because we couldn't get through to him. Secondly my cousin Kim worked in one of the towers, so evryone was numb, we had feared the worst. Fortunately for her she had decided not to go in to work that day, but instead worked from home. giving everyone a scare but a relief afterwards. the outcome of that day was diastrous and sad indeed, i am sadden even more after viewing documentaries about the events of that day, but in the end i hold no ill feelings towards anyone, but i urge others when making decisions, they do not always affect just you, sometimes the impact is worldwide.

Hi I am Cadiola Singh, I am currently pursuing a Major in Elementary Education. I rated myself seven out of ten. I consider my strengths to be my easy going and friendly personality. One of my weaknesses is that I procrastinate. Two ways in which I deal with this weakness is that if given something to do, assignment, chore, whatever it is, I try my very best to attend to it immediately. Another solution to this weakness is having a friend who encourages and always urges me on.
